Paweł Sobczak (b. 1997) is a visual artist working mainly with painting and objects. He graduated with distinction (MA) from the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice.
He has had solo exhibitions at the Centre for Contemporary Art Kronika in Bytom, the BWA Contemporary Art Gallery in Katowice and in independent spaces such as Hidden Gallery in Prague. He has taken part in group exhibitions at the Musée royal de Mariemont in Belgium, Pola Magnetyczne Gallery in Warsaw and the Utazu Art Award Biennale in Japan, among others.
In his practice he examines traces of disappearance and transformation, relating them to memory, landscape and the relationships between matter, time and environment. He works with motifs drawn from geology, postindustrial landscapes, natural history and family experience. In painting he draws on the traditions of landscape and still life.
Coal holds a particular place in his work: a cultural figure tied to the history of Upper Silesia. He analyses its meanings as a residue of past life, an industrial raw material, a source of energy and a carrier of memory.
